Constantine 2 has received a new update that means good news for the movie. Keanu Reeves is set to return as John Constantine for the upcoming DC film, which will not be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe. Following the end of the Writers Guild of America strike, Constantine 2 seems to be back on track.
On BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, Constantine 2 director Francis Lawrence provided an exciting update on the status of the DC movie. According to Lawrence, Constantine 2 "will be very rated R," following a similar path to the one taken by the 2005 Constantine, only this time it seems the studio will not be imposing PG-13 rules, which Lawrence said hurt Constantine. The director also revealed that the sequel will follow Reeves as an older Constantine and commented on talks with DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Safran. Check out the full quote below:
"Lawrence: Those kinds of dark DC characters, Vertigo characters, have bounced around, and we’ve tried to gain control. We finally have, and Keanu, I, and Akiva Goldsman, who did the movie together originally, are batting around ideas, but we got sort of halted by the strike. However, we are actively coming up with ideas to create a part two, and it will be very rated R.
Interviewer: Now, is that a conversation that involves James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Films?
Lawrence: I mean, it has because they’re part of, you know, people who have controlled the rights, but really, this is a project that Akiva, Keanu, and I are doing. Without spilling too much, I would say, yes, my instinct is, as of now, the idea we have is that we would not be pretending that this is, you know, what happens two weeks after the last Constantine, but that this is an older version of John Constantine."
